Carpenters Local 579
In August of 1949 Local 579 received its charter from The United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America UBC. Since then we have been progressively moving into the 21st century, opening our new office, meeting rooms and the Carpenters Millwrights College, our most recent addition the U.B.C web site.
Despite our enthusiasm about the 21st century we will never forget the efforts of those members who fought hard from the beginning. Crafts people who were proud of the Carpentry Trade, and decided to work as a team for more recognition. Organizing themselves and signing cards to become members of the Brotherhood.
The United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners got its next foothold in the Province in 1953 when Local 1232 was formed in Corner Brook, again in 1955 when Local 1523 was formed in Grand falls and in 1959 Local 2564 Loggers and Industrial workers in Grand falls received their charter.
Carpenters Local 579 is the certified bargaining agent for all unionized carpenters in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Local 579 also represent’s unionized workers employed with Rona, Castle Building Supplies (Gander), Newfoundland Styro, Cottles Island Lumber Company, Kento Windows and Doors, and the Travelers Inn.
