In 1881, Peter J. McGuire helped found the United Brotherhood of Carpenters. In 1882, he proposed the idea of Labour Day to become a national holiday. Peter J. McGuire is now known as the founder of Labour Day.
This Labour day, we want to remember our past and continue to build our future. We are stronger in numbers and we would like to thank all our membership for their continued strength and dedication. We would like to wish you and your families a safe and happy Labour Day weekend.
On August 12th, 1881, Peter J. McGuire organized a convention in Chicago for 36 carpenters from 11 different cities. And with that, the United Brotherhood of Carpenters was born.
From 1881 to 2020, our union has accomplished so much. We’ve weathered many storms, but always come out stronger. As we continue to mentor and educate the newest generation of union carpenters, we always uphold the UBC’s legacy of hard work, top-notch training, and strong leadership.
Thank you to everyone who voted on Monday, June 29th.
After counting the ballots, Local 1588 Delegates for General Convention are below:
1. Gord Jacobs
2. Glenn Lewis
3. Joe Wilson
We would like to wish everyone a Happy Canada Day! Hope you have a wonderful day spent with your family and friends.
A reminder that all our offices are closed today but will be back to regular hours on July 2nd.
Yesterday we had an exciting day at each of the offices across Atlantic Canada. We held our very first Virtual Delegate Convention and elected our ACRC Executive. We want to say a big thank you to all our ACRC Delegates for participating and for everyone who ran for positions.
June 21 is National Indigenous Peoples Day. This is a day for all Canadians to recognize and celebrate the unique heritage, diverse cultures and outstanding contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples.
Too all of our Indigenous members, we celebrate today with you!
